Mrs Val HalfordObjection
Invercargill
This objection relates to a boundary change
This objection does not relate to a name change
Mrs Val Halford- I object to area in Central Southland north of the present electoral boundary (including Winton and Browns) being put in the Invercargill electorate.- Central Southland is very much a community of interest centred on Winton. Nearly all major facililities are based in Winton (including Central Southland College and Maternity Hospital, Medical Centre). As a result issues impacting Winton, have a major effect on areas like Drummond Centre Bush. Also our sport is centralised to Winton main hub. - The proposed boundary splits the Central Southland community in two, even leaving the town and racecourse in different electorates. Suggested solution- The last time the boundary was altered the southern part of Western Southland was included in the Invercargill electorate.- Including the rest of Western Southland would add around 3,800 people to Invercargill, similar to the Winton areas of 3,500. This would include Tuatapere, Ohai, Nightcaps and Otautau as this is all Western. - Southland is slit from Central Southland by the Aparima river. North of Fairfax there are only bridges at Otautau and Wrey's Bush. - To the north of Western Southland, the Takitimu Mountains. There is no real community of interest with the Te Anau Basin or Northern Southland. |

Mr Jim HalfordI object to the area in Central Southland north of electoral boundry being put in Invercargill electorateCentral Southland is one big community with Winton as its base with all facilities etc sports service clubs etc Suggested solutionIt would make more sense to continue North in Western Southland Tuatapere, Ohai-Nightcaps and Otautau. Making boundray the Aparima River would give you the same amount of voters. |

Mr John MacGillivrayI object to the area of Central Southland being divided into the Invercargill electorate. The hub of the area is Winton, which serves and supports a large rural area, including many small towns scattered in the immediate area, which is the life of the town and would cause major disruptions to a town which is prospering at the moment - unlike a lot of other small towns.Suggested solutionThe last time the boundary was altered it included Southern Western Southland and therrfore it seems logical to include the rest of the area, west of the Aparima to the Takatimu Mts!! In doing this it would keep a community united and foster unity in an area with similar interests. |

Mrs Lyndsay McDonaldWinton is a service town for farming, and has a large number of retired farmers, and sits better in the Clutha-Southland electorate. We do not have a community of interest with Invercargill, and our needs in terms of services will be very much subordinated to Invercargill and Bluff, whose needs are quite different. Some of the support services we now have, could be lost or merged "for the greater good".Suggested solutionRiverton is already in the Invercargill electorate, and it has satellite towns in Tuatapere and Otautau, which have similar communities of interest. I believe that a boundary enlargement west of Riverton would be better for all concerned. |

Mr Thomas Wayne HarpurI agree with the objector not wanting Winton to be included in the Invercargill electorate but I disagree with the suggested solution.Suggested solutionMataura has a significantly enhanced community of interest to Invercargill than Winton. Mataura/Invercargill communities of interest include State Highway 1, main Trunk Rail, Meat processing (all plants in Southland would come into the electorate if you wen to the Gore boundary, Timber processing at Daiken is akin to Niagara, Milk processing at Edendale draws staff from Invercargill and Mataura. |

Mark DoggettIncluding Mataura into the Invercargill electorate does not make sense. Mataura is tied in with the hub in that area which is Gore. Gore services all the towns surrounding it, including Matuara, this is highlighted further with the MLT which only includes both towns.I also feel that including Winton into the Invercargill electorate will put all the surrounding towns at a disadvantage. Winton is the hub for all the towns surrounding it and they need to be included as a whole. Suggested solutionTo keep Matuara and Gore together in the Southern region. |

Raymond Paul SearanckeI strongly support the objection of Margot Hishon and object to the area of Central Southland, including Winton and Browns, north of the current Invercargill electorate boundary, being included within the Invercargill electorate. If this proposal was to go ahead you would be splitting a significant community of interest into a community of no interest. The proposed new boundaries are clumsy and make no sense. Winton provides virtually all of the major facilities to the vast Central Southland area, including Central Southland College, the maternity hospital, the district nurses base and the Central Southland Community support service. The long standing daily bus service between Winton and Invercargill has recently ceased, another example of a distinct lack of being, 'communities of interest'. Suggested solutionIncluding all of the area west of the Aparima River into the Invercargill electorate would be a practical solution. A large amount of the Western Southland area is already in the Invercargill electorate. The secondary school zoning for the Ohai/Nightcaps area is Tuatapere and for the Otautau area is Riverton. The Otautau Community Health Trust services clients from the major part of Western Southland including the Bupa rest home in Riverton and a significant number of individuals from the Riverton area. Employment, child care, the service industry and professional services for those living in the area is mainly Western Southland and Invercargill, the natural flow is west and south. The perfect, natural boundary of the Aparima river is significant, it provides a clear, obvious and descriptive boundary. It creates no confusion. |
