S14-002 | Colin Foster | Objection | Boundary | |
Colin FosterObjection
Dunedin South
This objection relates to a boundary change
This objection does not relate to a name change
Colin FosterMy town (Lawrence) is part of Clutha District, and our current electorate is Clutha-Southland (the clue there is in the name!). It is madness to "move" us into Dunedin South - we have no organisational, territorial or other connection to the city, which is a major urban centre and has nothing in common in terms of priorities and representation with a rural dustrcict such as ours.Changing our electorate purely so Dunedin South can achieve some nominal quota is ridiculous, and gives no weight to the nature of the area, natural boundaries and exisiting allegiances or the views and wishes of our people. An MP representing a major urban conurbation will naturally prioitise time and policy in directions which are likely to be in conflict with the needs of rural areas. Suggested solutionRedefine Dunedin South as required to properly represent the large conurbation of city, suburbs and closer dormitory towns which have a natural affinity and more common needs and priorities, rather than arbitrarily redrawing boundaries for no concrete reason. |

Karen AndersonI am currently part of Clutha-Southland electorate and would like it to remain so.After having spoken with other people in the Balclutha area and coming from a rural township, our issues are different from that of a city i.e. Dunedin. |

Mr Nathan FarrMy objection is to the fact that these changes clearly favour one party. The New Zealand National Party. The changes take in a large part of Clutha-Southland. And this said electorate (Clutha-Southland) is a National Safe Seat. And these changes will allow the National voter base in Dunedin South to increase and to change the number of National/Labour Party voter number in Favour of National. The changes are not fair and will favour one party of another. |

Eric LordI oppose the proposed boundary changes for Dunedin South. The Otago Peninsula is and integral part of Dunedin South and is geographical separated for Dunedin North. Furthermore, Balclutha is such a distinct and geopolitically different region from Dunedin that it should not be included in Dunedin South. Furthermore, Dunedin people are being discriminated against as the population covered in both Dunedin electorates is significantly larger (6-8%) than most Auckland City electorates.Suggested solutionThere is no need to change the boundary and this will be clear if the latest Census had been done properly. In fact, no boundary changes should be made until the Census is done again. Dunedin's population (130,000 for Dunedin City alone) has grown much faster than what has been incorrectly estimated by the latest Census, which used incorrect extrapolations based on previous years' growth. This further accentuates the population difference between Dunedin and Auckland electorates. |

This objection does not relate to a name change
Mrs Donna BuxtonI would like to see the boundaries of the Clutha District remain in the Clutha-Southland Electorate. As it is proposed the Clutha District will be represented by three electorates - Southland, Clutha Southland and Dunedin South. I believe in time that this would strengthen any case to amalgamate our district into other councils which will see the dissoltion of our current council and have a significant impact on the area. Balclutha and surrounding areas are a rural community and face different issues to that of a city. I also believe that we will not get the same representation in Parliament as we currently have. Finally, how absurd that a town named BalCLUTHA is not in the CLUTHA-Southland district. |

Leonard BielskiPlease provide Commission my support in the proposed changes to South Dunedin electoral boundary to include Waihola. Reason Waihola is a commuter suburb to Dunedin city. The majority of households persons here are commuters to city. And should not be included in Clutha-Southland rural type electoral. |

Mr Ian PentecostThis proposal will radically alter the political makeup of the area. The Otago Peninsula is next to and has a long association with South Dunedin. The Otago Peninsula is not close to Dundedin North. The proposal will make South Dunedin a rural electorate. Suggested solutionEnlarge rural electorates |

Marie CrawfordMilton and Balclutha should not be apart of Dunedin South. Dunedin South should not go this far south. Issues that arise in the city are different to those in town or in rural areas. Dunedin swings more towards labor and Clutha region aligns more with national. You can't put a townie MP in control of the country.Suggested solutionIf Clutha/Southland electorate is too big then separate them into two different electorates. |

Ms Sarah LyonI object to the Clutha district being moved out of Otago and into the Southland area. We are part of Otago and this should not be changed. The ‘boundary’ should fall Clutha - Otago. How can you just decide to change an areas ‘region’ we identify as people of Otago and always have.Suggested solutionLeave Clutha in the Otago catchment |

Mr Dominic TaySee also my comments on Dunedin North regarding communities of interest in the south Dunedin area, suggesting the transfer of Musselburgh, Andersons Bay and Tainui into Dunedin North and associated renaming. This objection provides consequential transfers into Dunedin South resulting from my suggestions regarding Dunedin North. With or without my proposed changes, the addition of the Balclutha area and loss of the Otago Peninsula area means that the name of this electorate is no longer appropriate. Suggested solutionGiven that Dunedin South as proposed is slightly below quota and is projected to lose population in 2023, I recommend either:• adding central Otago communities around Clyde, Alexandra and Roxburgh from Clutha-Southland; or • adding the balance of the Clutha District from Clutha-Southland. Either of these changes would also offset my proposed changes in Dunedin North and Clutha-Southland. With or without my proposed changes, the addition of the Balclutha area and loss of the Otago Peninsula area means that the name of this electorate is no longer appropriate. I propose the name of Dunedin South be changed to 'Taieri', 'Clutha Taieri' (preferred) or 'South Otago'. |
