S14-002 | Colin Foster | Objection | Boundary | |
Colin FosterObjection
Dunedin South
This objection relates to a boundary change
This objection does not relate to a name change
Colin FosterMy town (Lawrence) is part of Clutha District, and our current electorate is Clutha-Southland (the clue there is in the name!). It is madness to "move" us into Dunedin South - we have no organisational, territorial or other connection to the city, which is a major urban centre and has nothing in common in terms of priorities and representation with a rural dustrcict such as ours.Changing our electorate purely so Dunedin South can achieve some nominal quota is ridiculous, and gives no weight to the nature of the area, natural boundaries and exisiting allegiances or the views and wishes of our people. An MP representing a major urban conurbation will naturally prioitise time and policy in directions which are likely to be in conflict with the needs of rural areas. Suggested solutionRedefine Dunedin South as required to properly represent the large conurbation of city, suburbs and closer dormitory towns which have a natural affinity and more common needs and priorities, rather than arbitrarily redrawing boundaries for no concrete reason. |

Karen AndersonI am currently part of Clutha-Southland electorate and would like it to remain so.After having spoken with other people in the Balclutha area and coming from a rural township, our issues are different from that of a city i.e. Dunedin. |

Mr Nathan FarrMy objection is to the fact that these changes clearly favour one party. The New Zealand National Party. The changes take in a large part of Clutha-Southland. And this said electorate (Clutha-Southland) is a National Safe Seat. And these changes will allow the National voter base in Dunedin South to increase and to change the number of National/Labour Party voter number in Favour of National. The changes are not fair and will favour one party of another. |

This objection does not relate to a name change
Eric LordI oppose the proposed boundary changes for Dunedin South. The Otago Peninsula is and integral part of Dunedin South and is geographical separated for Dunedin North. Furthermore, Balclutha is such a distinct and geopolitically different region from Dunedin that it should not be included in Dunedin South. Furthermore, Dunedin people are being discriminated against as the population covered in both Dunedin electorates is significantly larger (6-8%) than most Auckland City electorates.Suggested solutionThere is no need to change the boundary and this will be clear if the latest Census had been done properly. In fact, no boundary changes should be made until the Census is done again. Dunedin's population (130,000 for Dunedin City alone) has grown much faster than what has been incorrectly estimated by the latest Census, which used incorrect extrapolations based on previous years' growth. This further accentuates the population difference between Dunedin and Auckland electorates. |

This objection relates to a boundary change
This objection does not relate to a name change
Mrs Donna BuxtonI would like to see the boundaries of the Clutha District remain in the Clutha-Southland Electorate. As it is proposed the Clutha District will be represented by three electorates - Southland, Clutha Southland and Dunedin South. I believe in time that this would strengthen any case to amalgamate our district into other councils which will see the dissoltion of our current council and have a significant impact on the area. Balclutha and surrounding areas are a rural community and face different issues to that of a city. I also believe that we will not get the same representation in Parliament as we currently have. Finally, how absurd that a town named BalCLUTHA is not in the CLUTHA-Southland district. |

Leonard BielskiPlease provide Commission my support in the proposed changes to South Dunedin electoral boundary to include Waihola. Reason Waihola is a commuter suburb to Dunedin city. The majority of households persons here are commuters to city. And should not be included in Clutha-Southland rural type electoral. |

Mr Ian PentecostThis proposal will radically alter the political makeup of the area. The Otago Peninsula is next to and has a long association with South Dunedin. The Otago Peninsula is not close to Dundedin North. The proposal will make South Dunedin a rural electorate. Suggested solutionEnlarge rural electorates |

This objection relates to a boundary change
This objection does not relate to a name change
Marie CrawfordMilton and Balclutha should not be apart of Dunedin South. Dunedin South should not go this far south. Issues that arise in the city are different to those in town or in rural areas. Dunedin swings more towards labor and Clutha region aligns more with national. You can't put a townie MP in control of the country.Suggested solutionIf Clutha/Southland electorate is too big then separate them into two different electorates. |

Ms Sarah LyonI object to the Clutha district being moved out of Otago and into the Southland area. We are part of Otago and this should not be changed. The ‘boundary’ should fall Clutha - Otago. How can you just decide to change an areas ‘region’ we identify as people of Otago and always have.Suggested solutionLeave Clutha in the Otago catchment |

This objection relates to a name change
Mr Dominic TaySee also my comments on Dunedin North regarding communities of interest in the south Dunedin area, suggesting the transfer of Musselburgh, Andersons Bay and Tainui into Dunedin North and associated renaming. This objection provides consequential transfers into Dunedin South resulting from my suggestions regarding Dunedin North. With or without my proposed changes, the addition of the Balclutha area and loss of the Otago Peninsula area means that the name of this electorate is no longer appropriate. Suggested solutionGiven that Dunedin South as proposed is slightly below quota and is projected to lose population in 2023, I recommend either:• adding central Otago communities around Clyde, Alexandra and Roxburgh from Clutha-Southland; or • adding the balance of the Clutha District from Clutha-Southland. Either of these changes would also offset my proposed changes in Dunedin North and Clutha-Southland. With or without my proposed changes, the addition of the Balclutha area and loss of the Otago Peninsula area means that the name of this electorate is no longer appropriate. I propose the name of Dunedin South be changed to 'Taieri', 'Clutha Taieri' (preferred) or 'South Otago'. |

Logan StadnykThis electorate is going to be called Dunedin South. and while it does include the southern suburbs of Dunedin, it also has a significant population in the Clutha District, I think that many people in Milton, Lawrence, Balclutha and Kaitangata will be uncomfortable about the name and I think a different name would be appropriate.Suggested solutionA different name for the electorate, perhaps "Central-South Otago" or "Lower Otago" |

Adam DartonI support the boundary recommendation for Dunedin South by the Commission. Including the Clutha district with Taieri is culturally fitting and means the Taieri Plains will be serviced by the same Member of Parliament rather than two. Dunedin South provides schools, businesses, medical centres and opportunities for people in Clutha/Taieri region.Suggested solutionKeep the boundaries as is. |

Anthony KingThe Queenstown lakes district, including Queenstown, Wanaka and Cromwell is an area that has very similar interests, people, and requirements. However currently, Wanaka and Cromwell are split into the Waitaki electorate, whereas Clutha Southland includes a large area of rural Southland. Waitaki is also a largely rural electorate. This means that the MPs are balancing majorly different requirements for their constituents.Suggested solutionMake an electorate using primarily the Queenstown Lakes District Council area, then include a lot of the Central Otago area. The rural areas of the existing Waitaki and Clutha Southland areas can then either be added to nearby electorates, or an additional electorate that services the largely rural areas from these two electorates can be combined instead of splitting the Queenstown lakes area between two electorates. |

Mr Geoffrey ThomsonBoundary adjustments appear based solely on population movements, rather than communities if interest.Suggested solutionThe Southern Lakes area (Lake Hawea in the north-east to Lake Manapouri in the south-west to Alexandra in the south-east) is a community of interest based on tourism. A new "Southern Lakes" electorate should be formed to cover these areas, and the remaining Clutha-Southland and Waitaki electorate areas combine to form a separate new "Clutha-Waitaki" electorate, whose community of interest would be rural, resource-based industries. This would allow the "Southern Lakes" MP to focus on major tourist issues, and be the "go-to" voice for these issues in Parliament. |

Clutha-Southland
This objection relates to a boundary change
This objection does not relate to a name change
Malc HodgeI live in Alexandra which is currently in the Waitaki Electorate. It is proposed that we become part of the Clutha Southland electorate. Alexandra (if you don't know) is in CENTRAL OTAGO. It is not in Clutha or Southland. Central Otago takes in the two largest towns of Alexandra & Cromwell, which have a common Mayor. While the proposed changes would move Alexandra, Cromwell would remain in the Waitaki electorate. This is just crazy. At the same time Wanaka which is part of the QLDC (Central Otago area) would remain in the Waitaki electorate. Again crazy. What is needed and would make more sense is to have a CENTRAL OTAGO electorate which takes in all of the CODC area and the QLDC area. This whole area (particularly Queenstown & Wanaka and to a slightly lessor extent, Cromwell & Alexandra are growing at an enormous rate as such we deserve and need our own Electorate rather than being lumped into areas with which we have no natural or logical association. I trust common sense will prevail in this matter.Suggested solutionAs noted above. |

This objection relates to a boundary change
This objection does not relate to a name change
Alexa ForbesQueenstown and Wanaka are combined as in a common Territorial Authority and are part of a common ward of the Otago Regional Council, yet are split at national level. This makes no sense at all and makes it incredibly difficult for its common interests to be represented nationally. Queenstown and Wanaka, combined with Te Anau and Cromwell, are a community of interest (tourism) and should be treated as such. Tourism issues get lost in the agricultural ones as these towns are uncomfortably paired with predominantly rural areas.Suggested solutionRedraw the boundaries to bring together all of the Queenstown Lakes District, Te Anau and Cromwell as an electorate that has common interests and common issues. |
