N04-037 David Hoggard Objection Name

David Hoggard

Objection

Helensville
This objection does not relate to a boundary change
This objection relates to a name change

David Hoggard

The Helensville name is not appropriate as the seat is much changed from its previous boundaries and Helensville is neither the largest town in the electorate, nor a central point within it.

Suggested solution

Rename the electorate as Kaipara. This refers to a body of water which is closer to much more of the electorate than the town of Helensville is, while also representing the Māori heritage of the area better than an English name. The electorate also takes in much of the Kaipara District. The Kaipara name was formerly used for two electorates on similar boundaries, existing for much of the 20th century and supplying well-known Members such as Lockwood Smith and Gordon Coates, the latest Prime Minister to be fluent in Te Reo.

As a resident of Tapora I have no affiliation with Helensville. I would prefer the electorate be named Rodney which is a far more inclusive term describing the area covered by the proposed boundary. Many residents of northern Rodney harbour dissatisfaction with being associated with the highly ineffectual Auckland city and being lumped in with Helensville only further increases that dissatisfaction.

Suggested solution

Call the electorate Rodney.

I do not agree with calling the electorate Helensville when Warkworth/Wellsford and the surrounding area which are proposed to be included in that electorate have no alignment whatsoever with Helensville. Helensville is on the west coast, Warkworth on the east. Warkworth in particular is identified as a growth or satellite town in the Auckland Plan and a more generic name rather than the particular name of a town (i.e. Helensville) gives people no real identity when they are from Warkworth/Wellsford. The name Helensville relates the that town specifically. I feel there will be many disgruntled voters in the Warkworth/Wellsford and surrounding area should the name Helensville prevail.

Suggested solution

Give the electorate a broader name - such as Rodney - or Atuanui.

This electorate area has been known historically as Rodney. At one time, the Rodney area covered both eastern and western coasts and included the Helensville area. the name of Helensville only refers to the town and its surrounds and not to the eastern coastal areas at all.

Suggested solution

I should like the name to revert to Rodney for the newly formed electorate as this name is inclusive of the entire area. It is not merely the name of a single town within a much wider area and has been an accepted name for this area for many years.

This area has been known historically as Rodney. It covered both eastern and western coasts and once included Helensville. The name Helensville only represent Helensville and its surrounds, not the entire area

Suggested solution

I should like the name to revert to Rodney. It is historically appropriate and it represents the entire area and not one single town within a much wider area.

Living in Warkworth, I strongly object to the name Helensville being used to describe my electorate. I have nothing to do with Helensville. I seldom visit there. It has no relevance to our special area.
"Rodney" was taken from Cape Rodney and doesn't specify a town so is more generic than using name of a town.

Suggested solution

Keep it as Rodney or find a name that won't polarise so many in the electorate.
How about Mahurangi?
Do some better thinking please.

'Rodney' is the name that is recognised as covering all the areas covered by the new boundary. The name Helensville is a township not an area. It makes sense to retain the name and identity of Rodney.

Suggested solution

Call the new area Rodney not Helensville.

The name Helensville bears no relation nor has no relevance to the east coast area of Pakiri.
Rodney carries geographical and historical relevance.

I live in Warkworth. I do not think the name Helensville is appropriate for my new electorate which combines much of the old Helensville with a significant part of the old Rodney electorate. I would like to propose the name Atuanui for the new electorate. Atuanui (Mt Auckland) is half way between the two coasts and one can see most of the electorate from the summit.

The name Helensville is not representative of the electorate - it is the name of 1 town within the electorate. It would be much better to retain the Rodney name as much of the electorate has not changed.

Suggested solution

Keep the Rodney name for this electorate
