23 parties claim election broadcasting share
Twenty-three political parties planning to contest the general election are claiming eligibility to be considered for a share of $3.212 million in broadcast election advertising funds, as well as 102 free minutes available for opening and closing addresses on each of Television New Zealand and National Radio.

The Electoral Commission resolved on 7 March 2005 to register the New Zealand Family Rights Protection Party, allowing the party to contest the party vote at a general election.

The first formal mechanisms in preparation for this year's general election are underway with political parties wanting to be considered for an allocation of broadcasting time or funds for radio or television election advertising having until Wednesday, 9 February, to let the Electoral Commission know.
