Two parties apply to make name and logo changes

The Opportunities Party and New Conservatives have applied to make changes to their names and logos.

The Electoral Commission is considering an application made under Part 4 of the Electoral Act 1993 to change the name of the following political party:

Current Party Name: The Opportunities Party
Current Party abbreviation: TOP
New Party Name: Opportunity Party
New Party abbreviation: Opportunity
Applicant: Hayden Cargo, Party Secretary

The Commission is also considering the party’s application made under Part 4 of the Electoral Act 1993 to register the following amended political party logo:

The Opportunity Party logo - the word OPPORTUNITY in capital letters with a circular shape above it

The Commission is considering a separate application made under Part 4 of the Electoral Act 1993 to change the name of the following political party:

Current Party Name: New Conservatives
New Party Name: Conservative Party NZ
Applicant: Therese Marie Dryden, Party Secretary

The Electoral Commission is also considering the party’s application made under Part 4 of the Electoral Act 1993 to register the following amended political party logo:

 

The Conservative Party NZ logo - the words CONSERVATIVES.NZ above the slogan Life Liberty Justice. The C in Conservatives is stylised with a koru pattern around a shoreline

 

Registration of a logo is needed for it to appear on a voting paper.  

Registration of a party name or abbreviation may be refused if the name or abbreviation is indecent, offensive, excessively long, likely to cause confusion or mislead electors, contains any reference to a title or honour or similar form of identification.  

Registration of a party logo may be refused if the logo is indecent, offensive, likely to cause confusion or mislead electors, or contains any reference to a title or honour or similar form of identification, infringes an intellectual property right or breaches any enactment.

Anyone who wishes to comment on the party name, abbreviation, or party logo in these applications may do so in writing to the Electoral Commission at:

The deadline for comments is 5pm, Tuesday 23 December 2025.
