The proposed boundaries cover a greater area more commonly known as The Hibiscus Coast rather than just the Whangaparaoa Peninsular.

The newly created electorate of Whangaparoa is a much needed creation for a growing area. However, its new name does not reflect the area. The area from Shakespeare Park in the east and Orewa in the west has long been referred to as the "Hibiscus Coast". The people in it call themselves Coasties, and the community facebook page is referred to as "Hibiscus Coast", and when elsewhere a member will say they hail from "the Hibiscus Coast", not Whangaparoa. Whilst a lovely little place, Whangaparaoa is the name of the peninsula, bay, and suburb, but NOT the entire area.

Suggested solution

Simply change the name to Hibiscus Coast. Our local and current MP Mark Mitchell agrees, as well as numerous others in the Hibiscus Coast facebook page, which I suggest may be a good point of call for seeing our community spirit :)

I believe that this electorate would be better named “Hibiscus Coast” as this would be more representative of the whole Electorate rather than just the bit that sticks out as a peninsula.
Hibiscus Coast is a well established name and is far more meaningful to the proposed electoral area overall. Whangaparoa forms part of the Hibiscus Coast area along with Orewa, Silverdale, Millwater, Hadfields Beach etc that do not consider themselves as part of Whangaparoa.

I'm European Maori dual Citizen (NZ & Canada) living with my 4 kiwi kids in Stanmore Bay (in Rodney the last 10yrs) & love Mark's idea of changing this new Electoral area from the long/difficult name of Whangaparoa to Hibiscus Coast, as our trees on the Coast reflect!
Hibiscus Coast is a great name to attract International Business & get better paying jobs for our Youth & Families, hopefully!!! Praying the HB name sticks!

The name "Whangaparaoa" traditionally refers to the peninsula. This electorate includes a wide variety of suburbs including Albany Heights, Paremoremo, Coatesville, Orewa and Hatfields Beach which are very geographically separated from the Peninsula, leading to potential confusion.

Name the electorate Auckland North. This is consistent with other naming conventions throughout the country. It also better reflects the wide range suburbs represented by the electorate.

I object to the name Hibiscus Coast as suggested by numerous objections. I had originally wondered about that too but research suggested any reservation I had about about Whangaparāoa was wrong. My objection to Hibiscus Coast centres around the fact that this name was an artificiality created by businesses in the 1970's to market the destination. Those businesses even gave away hibiscus plants to support their artificial name. It had nothing to do with the actual location (see page 3 attached September 18, 2019, Hibiscus Matters). The area has been known as Whangaparāoa since arguably before colonial arrivals.

Suggested solution

A Māori location name is an ideal solution as we grow up as a country. I love that we are saying good bye to Rodney which comes from some nod to a colonial, Admiral Sir George Brydges Rodney, who is far less likely to mean anything to the majority of the new electorate's population than the name Whangaparāoa. It feels like most objectors have ignored what Whangaparāoa means, Bay of Whales. Most of the proposed electorate borders on waters from the sea that is part of Whangaparāoa. I love being a Coastie, and that love and self-identification would not change in the event of an electorate name change, specially given that Whangaparāoa is a name so closely aligned with the idea of Coast. Currently around half the population of the proposed new electorate lives right on the Whangaparāoa peninsula itself. This further rises to probably 75% plus if you take in to account everyone directly touched by the waters of the "Bay of Whales". I think Whangaparāoa is a good option.

(1) I opose the Change in Boundaries
(2) RODNEY has been in existance since 1769 when Cpt Cook and his crew sighted and named the land now known as Cape Rodney Leigh.
(3) Should there be a name change then I would strongly support retaining RODNEY asfter it's historical association.
(4) Alternatively I would suggest COAST TO COAST or TWIN COAST ie incorporating both KOwhai Coast & Kaipara Coasts

My objection to the changes of the Rodney Electoral Boundary name change is -
That I would prefer Rodney to keep its name, instead of changing it to Helensville.
There is a Heritage history, as Rodney was name after Sir George Brydges Rodney who was a British admiral, named by Captain James Cook.
Helensville, as a name, has no significance to this area. I like the size of the new Boundary but not the name. You will need a second electorate office on Warkworth, as it's to far to travel from Wellsford to Kumeu.

Suggested solution

The new Boundary is good, but not as the name of Helensville which means nothing to the Rodney Residents.
Also, having one Electorate office in Kumeu, is in the west and Warkworth in the East need an office to serve this area also.

Helensville and the Warkworth/Wellsford area share little in common. We are probably more aligned to Whangaparaoa being east coast townships. In addition, Warkworth will probably be like Whangaparaoa one day with around 20,000 more people expected to live here over the next 30 years.
With regard to the name Warkworth/Wellsford people will struggle with identifying as Helensville. That name to town specific. If the name is to change make it something more broad - stick with Rodney.

Boundary - Warkworth is undergoing rapid expansion under the AUP and it's population is set to increase from 5000 to over 30,000 people in the next 10 to 15 years just like Orewa/Silverdale/Millwater has done. We are far more aligned to the East Coast Bays than we are to the West coast so amalgamating with Helensville does not make sense. We wish to keep Mark Michell as our MP.
Name - It is inappropriate to call our electorate Helensville wheher there is a boundary change or not. Our electorate should remain with Rodney as it's name similar to the Rodney Local Board area of Auckland Council which includes Helensville, although we have requested this be split into two boards, East & West.

Suggested solution

Align the boundary changes with an area on the East Coast and in any event keep the electorate name as Rodney.

Why don't we get to vote on this??? I seriously object to that. This process has been swept under the rug.
The old Rodney district included Helensville and it didn't work. The east coast is too different from the west coast. We have nothing in common with Helensville. No one I know in Rodney ever goes there. I agree with splitting off the southern part of the district but from Puhoi north, including Pakiri and Wellsford should remain Rodney. Why are there population requirements? We shouldn't even be part of Auckland. We were forced into it and it hasn't worked if you ask people who actually live in north Rodney.
Rodney is a much better name anyway. What kind of name is Helensville anyway (stupid)?

Residents should be able to vote on this! We don't trust that council has our best interests in mind. As per above, make everything north of Puhoi, including Pakiri & Wellsford part of Rodney but leave the west coast as another district. Population shouldn't matter. It's about what works best for residents, not the council.My ideal would be for north Rodney to not be part of Auckland at all.
Keep the name Rodney whatever you force us into,

My objection to the proposed boundary is that the east coast in the present Rodney has no community interaction with the western Helensville area. People living around SH1 socially and community wise go up and down the highway. From the proposed northern area of Helensville commuting from the Warkworth area is difficult.
The name Helensville is inappropriate. Helensville is a small area totally disconnected from Warkworth or Wellsford.

Suggested solution

The population at the southern end of the current Rodney is much closer to Helensville. Could they not be included and leave the northern end in Rodney.
Name- The name needs to cover the proposed area, Rodney (which Helensville used to be in) would be a lot more appropriate otherwise Rodney/Kaipara.

It will change the focus for the region. The local MP's for the areas have both been working on projects for their specific electorate. My biggest fear is that huge infrastructure changes that are needed in both areas may get lost in the handover. These two candidates know their areas best, and we need massive change to keep in step for growth in these areas, and we could get lost in central government priorities, which would have a devastating effect.

Leave it as it is, apply some logic to the situation, we are already getting left behind in Super City growth.
