Referral to Police
On 18 March, the Electoral Commission referred MediaWorks New Zealand and a 2023 General Election candidate to Police for radio advertisements broadcast between 23 September and 13 October 2023.
The broadcasting of the radio advertisements constitute alleged breaches of section 80I of the Broadcasting Act which prevents a candidate broadcasting a party advertisement and sections 204F and 204H of the Electoral Act regarding promoter statements and prior written authorisation.
As this matter is now with the Police, the Electoral Commission will not be commenting further.
