Registration of Freedoms New Zealand
On 15 February 2023, the Electoral Commission approved the registration of Freedoms New Zealand under Part 4 of the Electoral Act 1993.
Registered party name: Freedoms New Zealand
Party name abbreviation: Freedoms NZ
The Electoral Commission determined that the application of Freedoms New Zealand complies with the requirements of the Electoral Act 1993.
Under sections 65 of the Act, the Electoral Commission must refuse an application for the registration of a political party if the name of the party or of any proposed abbreviation is indecent or offensive, excessively long, likely to cause confusion or mislead electors.
The Commission carefully considered a range of matters including public submissions, the statutory test and framework, the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 and freedom of expression, and the proposed name compared to existing registered party names.
Taking all of the above considerations into account, the Board was satisfied that Freedoms New Zealand’s party name is not likely to cause confusion or mislead electors.
Accordingly, the Board determined that the application of Freedoms New Zealand complies with the requirements of the Electoral Act 1993 and that Freedoms New Zealand be registered.
The Register of Political Parties and Logos will be updated accordingly.
Freedoms New Zealand has also applied to register a logo, and that application is currently being processed.
