Last chance to enrol for second flag referendum

Feb 29, 2016 | Media release

If you’re not enrolled for the second referendum on the New Zealand flag, you need to do it right now. That’s the message from the Electoral Commission with just a few days until voting begins.

“Only those who are enrolled by this Wednesday will be able to vote in this final binding referendum,” says Robert Peden, Chief Electoral Officer. “If you’re not yet enrolled to vote, this is your absolute last chance to get enrolled in time to take part.”

Voting papers will be sent out from this Thursday, but can only be sent to those who are enrolled by Wednesday 2 March.

The referendum runs from Thursday 3 March until Thursday 24 March. Voters will be asked to choose between the current New Zealand flag and the preferred alternative design selected in the first referendum in late 2015. The flag that receives the most votes in the second referendum will be the official flag of New Zealand.

“To have your say on the future of the New Zealand flag, you must enrol now,” says Mr Peden. “Go online at www.elections.org.nz or visit a Postshop now to complete an enrolment form.”

More information about taking part in the referendums on the New Zealand flag is available at www.elections.org.nz/flag or on 0800 36 76 56.
