Referral to the Police - 6 October 2014
On 6 October 2014, the Electoral Commission referred MediaWorks for statements made on election day by an announcer on its station, George FM.
It is the Electoral Commission’s view that the broadcast of these statements by George FM breached section 197(1)(g)(i) of the Electoral Act as the broadcast included a statement intended to influence any elector about how to vote.
It is also the Electoral Commission’s view that the broadcast by George FM was an election programme which constitutes a breach of section 80 of the Broadcasting Act.
As this matter is now with the Police, the Electoral Commission will not be commenting further.
