Referral to the Police 11 September 2013
On 11 September 2013, the Electoral Commission referred MediaWorks to the Police for broadcasting an election programme. The programme, a skit on Novopay, appeared in TV3’s Jono and Ben at Ten broadcast on 28 June 2013.
It is the Electoral Commission’s view that the broadcast on 28 June 2013 constituted a breach of section 70 of the Broadcasting Act 1989 because it is an offence to broadcast an election programme outside the election period.
As this matter is now with the Police, the Electoral Commission will not be commenting further.
