Referral of alleged breaches of the Electoral Act 1993

Nov 2, 2011 | News

The Electoral Commission has referred the following matters to the Police:

  • Megan Woods, Facebook advertisement,
  • Michael Woodhouse, newspaper advertisements in The Star.

It is the Electoral Commission’s view that the publication of the Megan Woods Facebook advertisement constitutes a breach of section 204F of the Electoral Act 1993 because it was an election advertisement that did not contain a valid promoter statement.

It is the Electoral Commission’s view that the publication of the Michael Woodhouse newspaper advertisements in the Star constitutes a breach of sections 204F and 204H of the Electoral Act 1993 because the items are election advertisements that did not contain a valid promoter statement and were not authorised in writing by the party secretary.

As these matters are now with the Police, the Electoral Commission will not be commenting further.
