Māori Language Week a good time to get enrolled to vote

Jul 4, 2011 | Media release

The Electoral Enrolment Centre (EEC) welcomes the start of Māori Language Week today, Monday July 4.

“Māori Language Week is a great chance to use your voice and speak te reo, just as election year is a great way to use your voice and have your say on say on who runs the country,” says Murray Wicks, National Manager, Electoral Enrolment Centre.

“The Electoral Enrolment Centre provides a broad range of resources in te reo, and we are committed to making all our information accessible to everyone,” says Mr Wicks.

Getting on the electoral roll is the first step to participating in this year’s General Election and Referendum on the Voting System.

“The EEC aims to increase electoral participation of Māori, and encourages everyone to spread the word about the need to enrol amongst their whanau and communities,” says Mr Wicks.

The EEC sent out enrolment update packs to everyone on the roll at the end of May, to let them know that the election is on its way and to ask them to check their enrolment details.

Those who didn’t get a pack aren’t enrolled to vote, and should Freetext their name and address to 3676, get a form from a PostShop or call Freephone 0800 36 76 56. People can also enrol or update their details online at www.elections.org.nz.

“And this year it’s more important than ever,” says Mr Wicks. “Not only will New Zealand be voting for the politicians and political parties who will lead the country, we’ll also be voting on the system we use to choose those politicians.”

More information about enrolling and voting is available at www.elections.org.nz.
