Decision not to register Nga Iwi Morehu Movement logo

Oct 26, 2011 | News
At its meeting on 18 October 2011 the Electoral Commission considered an application made under Part 4 of the Electoral Act 1993 for the registration of a party logo by Nga Iwi Morehu Movement as shown below:

The Electoral Commission determined to refuse the application under section 65A(c)(ii) of the Electoral Act because, in the opinion of the Electoral Commission, the logo is likely to cause confusion or mislead electors on the following grounds:

The use of the word ‘Morehu’ implies incorrectly that Nga Iwi Morehu Movement is supported by the Ratana Established Church of New Zealand (‘the Ratana Church’).

The symbols proposed in the logo are likely to confuse or mislead electors having regard to their similarity with the star and crescent symbols used by the Ratana Church.
