Ethnic Communities, young people and those who've moved housed targeted in Botany by-election

Dec 15, 2010 | Media release

People who have moved into, or within, the Botany electorate and those who aren’t enrolled need to enrol now for the Saturday 5 March by-election.

“Although we recently completed an enrolment drive for the local council and district health board elections there will still be many people in the Botany electorate who have become newly eligible to enrol, who have moved house or haven’t enrolled yet,” says Maureen Hansen, Registrar of Electors, Botany Electorate.

“They need to enrol to vote now. Everyone enrolled in the Botany electorate by Tuesday 1 February 2011, the day the roll used on election day closes for printing, will be sent an EasyVote pack and card that will make voting easier,” says Mrs Hansen.

To be eligible to enrol in the Botany electorate you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or over; and

  • Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident who has lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months at some time; and

  • Have lived in the Botany electorate for one month or more.

“Preliminary electoral rolls with the details of everyone enrolled as at 14 December will be available for viewing at PostShops and public libraries within the Botany electorate or at Registrars of Electors’ offices throughout the country on Friday 16 December. People can also check their enrolment details on the elections website elections.org.nz,” says Mrs Hansen.

Currently 90.4% percent of eligible voters in the Botany electorate are enrolled to vote. Of those not enrolled almost 2,800, or 60.3 percent, are aged 18-29.

Enrolling is quick and easy. Enrolment forms are available from the elections website elections.org.nz, by Freetexting your name and address to 3676, from any PostShop or by calling Freephone 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56).

People can update their details by filling in a new enrolment form or going online to www.elections.org.nz.

Only people enrolled on the General electoral roll for the Botany electorate are eligible to vote in the by-election.
