Final hours to enrol to vote for Saturday's election

Nov 4, 2008 | Media release

Tens of thousands of people are about to miss out on this year’s election unless - with just hours left to go - they take action and enrol now.

“These people matter. Their votes can make a difference,” says Murray Wicks, National Manager, Electoral Enrolment Centre. “But they need to enrol now.”

The last day to enrol to vote is Friday 7 November. People cannot enrol on Election Day.

“While enrolment levels are very high, there are 170,000 people who still aren’t enrolled to vote on Saturday,” says Mr Wicks.

"There is still time to enrol – but you need to get a form and get it back to us by this Friday.”

The Electoral Enrolment Centre is advising people to go to a PostShop now and fill in a form there and then, or [347 download a form from www.elections.org.nz] and make sure it is returned by Friday 7 November.

With 2.965 million people currently enrolled or 94.5% percent of the eligible voting population New Zealand can claim one of the highest enrolment levels in the world.  2,738,101 people are on the general roll and 227,086 people are on the Māori roll.

“If you’ve received an enrolment from but haven’t sent it back, do it now,” says Mr Wicks.

"If you haven't received an EasyVote pack then you are not enrolled or your details need updating. Either fill in an enrolment form at your local PostShop or check your details or download an enrolment form online at www.elections.org.nz."

In 2005, 2.847 million people or 95.2 percent of eligible voters were enrolled to vote by Election Day. 208,003 people were enrolled on the Māori roll.
