Electoral Commission meeting summary

Jun 12, 2008 | News

The Electoral Commission met today.

It considered nine complaints alleging, in summary, that election advertisements had been published without promoter statements.  It decided four matters while consideration continues on the remaining five.

The Commission discussed the application of the EPMU to list as a third party, and consideration of whether the union is involved in the affairs of the Labour Party continues.  Decisions remain defered on whether to list two other unions affiliated to the Labour Party as third parties until the EPMU application is decided.

Explanations for late annual donations returns from six parties were considered. Further details are being sought in respect of two explanations.  Decisions were made as to whether the excuses of the four other parties were reasonable. One party's donation return remains outstanding pending the availability of the party auditor.

The decisions made at today's meeting are expected to be written up and approved for release by the end of next week.  Further details or comment will not be provided until then.
