47,000 Māori missing from the Electoral roll

Jul 23, 2008 | Media release

New figures reveal almost 47,000 Māori who were enrolled at some stage during the previous three years are no longer enrolled.

“We know that 46,858 people of Māori descent who were on the electoral roll at some stage during the last three years are now completely missing from the rolls today,” says Murray Wicks, National Manager of the Electoral Enrolment Centre.

“These people have let their enrolment lapse by not updating their details when they moved house."

“We are urging these ‘lost’ voters to re-enrol by filling in an enrolment form now,” says Murray Wicks, National Manager, Electoral Enrolment Centre.

The figures show:

  • 28,953 individuals of Māori descent previously enrolled on the Māori roll are now no longer enrolled
  • 17,615 individuals of Māori descent previously enrolled on the General roll are now no longer enrolled

The Electoral Enrolment Centre’s enrolment drive includes a multimedia communications programme as well as working in the community to reach people eligible to vote and to help them to enrol.

A total of 380,162 who identify as being of Māori descent are currently enrolled to vote - 164,962 on the General Roll and 215,200 on the Māori Roll.

Enrolling is easy. Enrolment forms are available by freetexting your name and address to 3676, or going online to www.elections.org.nz, or visiting any PostShop or calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56).  People can also check and update their details online at the website
