Over 12,500 Maori change roll type one month into the 2006 Maori Electoral Option
One month into the 2006 Maori Electoral Option and a total of 12,560 Maori have changed the type of electoral roll they are on, with a further 1,839 Maori enrolling for the first time.
“Awareness of the Maori Electoral Option is running high. Thousands of Maori have already made their choice between the General roll or the Maori roll and subsequently changed electoral roll type in the first month of the campaign,” says Murray Wicks, National Manager of the Electoral Enrolment Centre.
“On top of this, there are all those who have made their choice, and decided not to switch the type of electoral roll they are on,” says Mr Wicks.
The 2006 Maori Electoral Option started with the posting of 380,000 personalised Option packs on 3 April and finishes on 2 August 2006.

“Once the Maori Electoral Option is over on 2 August 2006 the final numbers on the General and Maori rolls will be used to help work out the number of General and Maori electorate MPs there will be in Parliament following the next two general elections,” says Mr Wicks.
“If you’re Maori, eligible to vote and still haven’t made your choice of roll type, Maori or General, then you should do so now.
“Either complete the Maori Electoral Option form sent in the mail in early April or fill in an enrolment form.”
