Wednesday cut off date for enrolling to vote

Aug 14, 2005 | Media release

Wednesday is the cut off date to enrol and make it on to the printed electoral roll used on Election Day, 17 September.

"It's crunch time for those tens of thousands of voters who still haven't enrolled," says Murray Wicks, National Manager of the Electoral Enrolment Centre.

"Voters have their last chance in the next three days to get on the electoral rolls used in polling booths on Election Day." says Mr Wicks.

Currently 93.2 percent of eligible voters or 2,790,630 people are enrolled.

"Most people are getting the message that they need to enrol or update their details to set them up to vote on 17 September, but there are still about 204,000 potential voters who haven't done anything to enrol.

"We strongly urge people to enrol by Wednesday, 17 August. It will make it much easier on Election Day.

"If you don't enrol by Wednesday you will have to cast a special declaration vote on Election Day, which takes much longer and isn't counted on election night. You won't get an EasyVote card, which makes the whole process so much easier on Election Day, either" says Mr Wicks.

Three electorates are lagging behind the rest of the country.

  • In Auckland Central, 65.8% of eligible voters are enrolled. 23,000 voters in this electorate are still to enrol, and 38.1% of these are aged 18-24 years.
  • In Dunedin North, 81.4% of eligible voters are enrolled. 8,900 voters in this electorate are still to enrol, and 96.8% of these are aged 18-24 years.
  • In Wellington Central, 85.4% of eligible voters are enrolled. 8,100 voters in this electorate are still to enrol, and 53.9% of these are aged 18-24 years.

Other key statistics:

  • 90,500 18-24 year olds still to enrol
  • 367,300 voters of Maori descent have enrolled.
  • 202,200 voters are on the Maori roll
  • 37,900 voters enrolled at overseas address
