These resources align with level 5 of the New Zealand Curriculum. They explore how voting, New Zealand’s government and issues that local communities face all affect one another. Connect voting to your students’ own lives to deepen their understanding of how New Zealand's government works.

Conceptual strand: Identity, Culture and Organisation

Students learn about society and communities and how they function. They also learn about the diverse cultures and identities of people within those communities and about the effects on the participation of groups and individuals.

Key competencies

There are multiple opportunities for students to use a combination of key competencies in the learning activities. In particular these activities focus on:

  • Thinking – Students will analyse and assess community issues and engage with a variety of perspectives
  • Participating and contributing – Students will evaluate what political parties best represent the issues they care about, and understand how to participate in Government

Level 5 (Years 9-10) achievement objectives

Students will gain knowledge, skills and experience to understand how systems of government in New Zealand operate and affect people's lives.

Level 4 (Years 7-8) achievement objectives

Students will gain knowledge, skills and experience to understand:

  • how people participate individually and collectively in response to community challenges.
  • the ways in which leadership of groups is acquired and exercised have consequences for communities and societies.
