Take a moment before you share information
The Electoral Commission is advising people to slow down and take a moment to check information about enrolling and voting before sharing it this election.
“We want people to feel more confident to sort fact from fiction when it comes to the 2026 General Election,” says Karl Le Quesne, Chief Electoral Officer.
“There is always the potential for a rapid spread of inaccurate information on social media and messaging platforms.
“We’ll be running advertising over the next few months giving people a prompt to pause and look again at information they are seeing before they trust it or share it.”
One of the Commission’s key roles is to ensure that voters have clear information about the conduct of the election, including how and when people can enrol and vote.
“The Electoral Commission is the trusted source of information about enrolling and voting in the election. You can check our website vote.nz or call 0800 36 76 56 for key election information,” says Karl Le Quesne.
“We don’t regulate the content of election advertising or campaign materials, but we do have information on our website about what to do if you see information you’re unsure about, and where to direct complaints.”
