Candidate nominations close soon
Candidate nominations for the 2026 General Election close at noon Thursday 8 October 2026.
Parties, nominators and candidates are encouraged to ensure that all nomination requirements are completed as soon as possible as this deadline cannot be extended.
Who can be a candidate
To be a candidate you must be enrolled to vote and a New Zealand citizen by noon 8 October.
Party secretaries of registered parties can bulk nominate all of their electorate candidates, and lodge their party list.
Candidates wanting to stand in the 2026 General Election, who are not being bulk nominated, must be nominated by two electors who are enrolled in the electorate in which you are standing, and pay a deposit of $300.
Individual electorate candidate nominations should be emailed to nominations@elections.govt.nz
Alternatively, an individual nomination may also be lodged in person by appointment with the Returning Officer (Electorate Manager) for the electorate you want to stand in.

Candidate Briefing
Returning Officers will hold a candidate briefing online between 12 and 16 October 2026. All electorate candidates are encouraged to attend. The Returning Officer will send invitations to candidates after nominations close.
