Process for a by-election
Tērā te uira ka kanapū i te rangi. Ka papā te whatitiri
Rū ana te whenua. Kahukura ki te rangi
Ueue katoatia Te Rohe Pōti o Tāmaki Makaurau
Pōkarekare nga tūpuna moana o Manukau o Waitematā
Haere mai haere e Takutai. Kua timu te tai
Kua whakarerea e koe nga mamaetanga o te ao kikokiko.
Kua mōkaia hoki e. E okioki.
The Electoral Commission extends its condolences to the whānau of Takutai Tarsh Kemp, the Te Pāti Māori MP who has passed away.
Her passing will trigger a by-election in the Tāmaki Makaurau electorate.
There is a process to follow before the timetable for a by-election can be set, which can take a few days.
After the Speaker of the House declares a vacancy, the Prime Minister decides the by-election date and announces it. The Governor-General will then issue a writ for a by-election to be held.
A detailed timetable will be released on vote.nz when the dates have been confirmed.
