By-election update
Notice of a vacancy in the Tāmaki Makaurau Māori electorate has been published by the Speaker in the New Zealand Gazette following the death of the sitting MP.
Notification of the vacancy is one of the key steps towards holding a by-election to elect a new member of Parliament to represent Tāmaki Makaurau.
The Prime Minister will decide the by-election date and announce it. The Governor-General will then issue a writ for a by-election to be held.
Māori Electoral Option rules for a by-election
Under the Electoral Act, from the date the vacancy is declared (9 July), voters of Māori descent cannot change rolls if it would put them in the electorate where the by-election is being held.
That means if you live in the Tāmaki Makaurau area, the roll you’re on now – Māori roll or general roll – is the roll you will be on at the time of the by-election.
Applications to change rolls during the next three months will be actioned after the by-election and local elections.
