By-election referral to the Police
The Electoral Commission has referred a matter to the Police relating to a billboard on display on election day for the Tāmaki Makaurau by-election.
Under section 197 of the Electoral Act 1993, it is an offence to publish, on election day, any statement advising or intended or likely to influence any elector as to the candidate the elector should vote or not vote for.
As this matter is now with the Police, the Electoral Commission will not be commenting further.
