Orange Guy is back to help get NZ ready to vote

Aug 2, 2023 | Media release

With less than three months to go until the 2023 General Election, Orange Guy and his dog Pup are back to help get New Zealanders ready to vote in October.

New Zealanders across the country will see Orange Guy and Pup pop up in all sorts of places reminding them to check and update their enrolment details. This week, the Electoral Commission is sending out personalised enrolment update packs to 3.4 million enrolled voters.

Chief Electoral Officer Karl Le Quesne says it’s important people check their packs to make sure everything’s correct.

“We need everyone to check their details are up to date and make any changes needed. Make sure you’re enrolled at the address where you live by 10 September. That way, you’ll get an EasyVote card and information about the election ahead of time, which will make voting easier.

“If you don’t receive a pack by mid-August it means you’re either not enrolled, or your details are incorrect. If that is the case, the easiest way to enrol or check your details is online at vote.nz.”

Enrolling takes about five minutes online at vote.nz using a New Zealand driver licence, New Zealand passport or RealMe verified identity. People can also enrol or update their details by filling in an enrolment form. Forms are available online at vote.nz, by calling 0800 36 76 56 or by texting your name and address to 3676.

"From 2 October until election day on 14 October you will choose the people and parties that represent you in Parliament. This is a big decision and it’s important you are enrolled to vote so your voice can be heard,” says Karl Le Quesne.

"The Electoral Commission is here to help you get all the information you need to take part in the election."

A total of 3,428,666 enrolment update packs are being sent to enrolled people across New Zealand and the world. Of those, 71,241 will be delivered to people living in 136 countries overseas, including 44,586 to Australia, 11,447 to the UK, 4,294 to the USA, and 1,752 to Canada
