Enrol now to make voting easy in local elections

Aug 8, 2016 | Media release

Time is running out for those who haven’t enrolled to vote, and the Electoral Commission is urging people to act quickly if they want to make voting easy in next month’s local elections.

“You will only get your voting papers sent to you if are enrolled by this Friday, 12 August,” says Robert Peden, Chief Electoral Officer.

“Do it now. Enrolling is easy, and it will make voting in the local elections much more simple.”

Voting papers can only be posted automatically to those enrolled by this Friday. Those who enrol after 12 August will need to cast a special vote, and will need to contact their local council for voting papers.

“There are still thousands of people who need to enrol now or they will miss out on getting their local election voting papers sent to them. We want everyone who’s eligible to be enrolled and ready to have their say,” says Mr Peden.

“Enrolling to vote is easy.”

Enrolling or updating enrolment details is easy, and involves simply filling in a new enrolment form. These are available online at www.elections.org.nz, or by calling 0800 36 76 56, freetexting your name and address to 3676, or visiting any PostShop.
