Enrol Now to Vote in the 2013 Citizens Initiated Referendum

Nov 11, 2013 | Media release

The Electoral Commission is encouraging people to make sure they’re enrolled to vote in the upcoming citizens initiated referendum that asks the question: ‘Do you support the Government selling up to 49% of Meridian Energy, Mighty River Power, Genesis Power, Solid Energy and Air New Zealand?’

“Voting in the referendum is by postal vote, so your address details on the electoral roll need to be correct to receive your voting papers in the mail,” says Robert Peden, Chief Electoral Officer.

The people who most need to make sure they’re on the electoral roll are those who have recently moved house or celebrated their 18th birthday.

“If you’ve turned 18 recently, get enrolled now and vote in the 2013 Citizens Initiated Referendum,” says Robert Peden, Chief Electoral Officer.

“You need to be on the roll by 21 November to have your say,” says Mr Peden.

You can check that your enrolment details are correct at our website www.elections.org.nz, by phoning 0800 36 76 56, or at any Postshop.

Voting in the referendum is from 22 November to 13 December 2013.

“If you’re correctly enrolled, you should get your voting paper by Friday 29 November,” says Mr Peden.
