Deadline looms for those wanting to present MMP review submissions in person

Apr 2, 2012 | Media release

People wanting to present their MMP Review submission at a public hearing need to get in quick – their written version must be with the Electoral Commission this week.

“If people want to present their submission in person, we need to hear from them now,” says Chief Electoral Officer Robert Peden. “Their written submission must be received by Thursday 5 April, so that the public hearings can be scheduled.”

Public hearings on the MMP Review will be held in April and May, when the Commission will travel to main centres to hear submissions in person. Only those who have provided a written submission by 5 April will be able to present at the public hearings.

“If you do want to appear at a public hearing and haven’t yet made your submission, call 0800 36 76 56 or visit www.mmpreview.org.nz for full information,” says Mr Peden. “Your written submission can be made online, by email, or by post, so there is still time to have your voice heard.”

Hearings will be held in Wellington in late April and Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch in May.

“These hearings are open to the public, so even if you don’t want to make a presentation, they are a good opportunity to hear the opinions of others,” says Mr Peden.

“Of course, if you don’t want to appear at a public hearing, you still have until Thursday 31 May to make your submission.”
