Tips for voting in the Botany by-election

Mar 4, 2011 | Media release

The Electoral Commission has two tips for voters in Saturday’s Botany by-election - take your EasyVote card, and remember that there will only be polling places within the electorate itself.

“There are 18 polling places for the Botany by-election across the electorate, open from 9am until 7pm sharp on election day. They are located throughout the community to make voting easy and accessible,” says Robert Peden, Chief Electoral Officer.

“Taking your EasyVote card will ensure you get your voting papers as quickly and smoothly as possible, whenever you go and vote” says Mr Peden.

Polling places are usually busiest between 9am and 11am. People can still vote without their EasyVote card.

“I would also encourage people to go with friends or family if that makes the voting experience better. This can be really helpful for those with English as a second language, or for those voting for the first time.”

The Electoral Commission is reminding people that if they cannot get to a polling place in Botany on Saturday, they need to vote in advance. Advance voting closes on Friday 4 March.

“If you can’t get to a polling place or advance voting place because you are sick or have a disability contact the Returning Officer for help on phone 09 583 1032 or email botany@electorate.govt.nz,” says Mr Peden.

The last chance to enrol to vote in the by-election is Friday 4 March.

“You can’t enrol on Saturday to vote in the by-election. Anyone who hasn’t enrolled yet needs to do it now,” says Mr Peden.

Election results will be available from www.electionresults.govt.nz progressively after voting closes at 7pm on Saturday 5 March.
