An inter-agency Coordination Group has been established to strengthen coordination and preparedness across government and support public confidence in New Zealand's 2026 General Election.
Hosted by the Ministry of Justice, the group builds on arrangements used in previous elections and works alongside the 2026 General Election protocols outlining the roles and responsibilities of the Electoral Commission and government agencies in delivering and supporting the election.
The Coordination Group will provide coordination and strategic oversight of threats and hazards that could affect the election. These may include foreign interference, malicious cyber activity, election-related phishing attempts, and scams targeting voters or election processes.
As electoral security threats continue to evolve, strong collaboration across government agencies is essential to ensure New Zealand's electoral system remains resilient and trusted.
The group will operate until a new Government is formed following the election.
Requests for secondees have been sent to agencies across the National Resilience System to support the group's work.
Lead agencies responsible for managing election-related threats and hazards are identified in the election protocols.
2026 General Election protocols
The Coordination Group does not replace the responsibilities or statutory functions of existing agencies.
Instead, it helps ensure a coordinated government response to issues that may affect the delivery of a free, fair, and secure election.
