Who reviews electorate boundaries?

The Representation Commission is the independent body that reviews the boundaries and names of electorates.

The next boundary review will take place before the 2026 General Election. The members of the Commission and the timetable for the review are still to be confirmed.

Public officials and government and opposition appointees make up the Representation Commission. Usually a current or retired judge chairs the Commission.

The members of the Representation Commission are:

  • Chair 
  • Surveyor-General 
  • Government Statistician 
  • Chief Electoral Officer 
  • Local Government Commission Chair
  • Government representative 
  • Opposition representative

When considering the Māori electorate boundaries, the Commission also includes:

  • Chief Executive, Te Puni Kōkiri 
  • Government Māori representative 
  • Opposition Māori representative
