Māori Electoral Option - halfway mark reminder to Māori to take part

Jun 14, 2006 | Media release

The message is again going out to Māori to take up their opportunity to choose whether to enrol on the General Roll or the Māori Roll.

Māori are being reminded to make a choice now about the type of electoral roll they enrol on for the next two Parliamentary elections.

“330,000 orange postcards are in the mail reminding people about the choice between the General Roll or the Māori Roll offered through the Māori Electoral Option which ends on 2 August 2006,” says Murray Wicks, National Manager, Electoral Enrolment Centre.

“We’ve reached the half-way point of the 2006 Māori Electoral Option, and we want to make sure people know about the choice they have and the easy steps to take part.

“If you’re Māori, eligible to vote and still haven’t made your choice of roll type, Māori or General, then you should do so now. If you want to change roll type, either complete the Māori Electoral Option form sent in the mail in early April or fill in an enrolment form,” says Mr Wicks.

Enrolment forms are available by freetexting your name and address to 3676, calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56) or by going to any PostShop. People can also enrol or update their details online at www.elections.org.nz.

NOTE: In early July the Electoral Enrolment Centre will release updated statistics on the number of Māori who have chosen to change electoral roll type or who have enrolled for the first time since the start of the Option in April. The statistics will include all responses to the reminder phase of the Option.
