With New Zealand’s 2020 General Election taking place in September, Youth Advocates are being recruited to work within their communities to encourage, motivate and inspire their friends, whānau, peers and the wider youth population to enrol and vote.

About the role

Do you have strong and established links within your communities (both face-to-face and online)? Are you a good communicator and comfortable with presenting? Are you keen to help promote the importance of participating in the General Election? Can you encourage, motivate and inspire your friends, whānau, peers, and wider youth population to enrol and vote?

If the above sounds like you and you’re aged between 18-29 – we could be looking for you.

As a Youth Advocate, you will work closely with Registrars of Electors, Commission Staff and stakeholders to support delivery of community engagement targeting eligible young Māori and Pacific voters.

To do this, you will:

  • Inform youth on the importance of enrolling and voting in the 2020 General Election electoral event and referenda
  • Inform youth on the importance of enrolling and voting in the 2020 General Election electoral event and referenda
  • Provide young people in your designated communities with information about New Zealand’s voting system, how the system works and how they can participate
  • Develop and implement local plans, alongside the Registrar, which encourages young people to enrol and vote – with a focus young Māori and Pacific voters
  • Have excellent social media and technical skills (to ensure you can effectively and efficiently deliver key messages across a range of channels).

Youth advocates will be employed on fixed term contracts and must be available to work between 29 June and mid-October. You will be provided with excellent training and the full support of a committed team to ensure your success in this role.
