Standing as a candidate for the 2023 General Election

Candidate nominations open on Monday 28 August 2023.

Individual electorate candidate nominations

The individual nomination form will be available in early June. This form must be completed by:

  • independent candidates
  • candidates for unregistered parties and
  • candidates for registered parties not making a bulk nomination. 

You have to be nominated by two voters enrolled in the electorate you want to contest.

A $300 deposit must be paid with an individual nomination.

The deadline to lodge your individual electorate candidate nomination is noon on Friday 15 September 2023.

Bulk nomination of electorate candidates by registered parties

Only registered parties can make a bulk nomination of electorate candidates. This is where the party secretary nominates all the electorate candidates representing the party by lodging a bulk nomination schedule with the Electoral Commission.

Contact your party secretary if you are being bulk nominated to stand as an electorate candidate for the 2023 General Election.

Parties can lodge their bulk nomination of electorate candidates from Monday 28 August.

The deadline to lodge a bulk nomination schedule for the 2023 General Election is noon on Thursday 14 September 2023.

Nominating list candidates

Only registered parties can stand list candidates. Party list candidates are lodged with the Electoral Commission by the party secretary.

Parties can lodge their party lists from Monday 28 August.

The deadline to lodge a party list for the 2023 General Election is noon on Thursday 14 September 2023.

Release of candidate details

We will publish candidate and party names (or independent) on vote.nz following the close of nominations. We do not publish any other candidate information.
